Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization or IASTM for short, this technique involves the use of a hard tool (Graston = stainless steel, Gua Sha = jade or basalt stone, etc.) in a specific area to help treat soft tissue conditions.

This therapy has roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine in the form of Gua Sha, where they use coins, smoothed animal horn or stone to “scrape” an entire area of the body to promote healing. In modern times, a technique called Graston using specific stainless steel tools has become popular in the athletic therapy field.

The goal is to induce local micro-trauma to renew blood flow and stimulate healing to new, old, or post surgical injuries. This technique can be uncomfortable and minor bruising may occur. However, it can be very effective in restoring range of motion, reducing pain, and restoring function.

Our massage therapists are able to integrate IASTM into your treatment plan as necessary at no additional cost to you. Talk to your RMT if you would like to try a form of IASTM, Graston, or Gua Sha today!
